Wind and solar power generation capacity has exceeded 50 GW in Shanxi, a milestone showing the coal-rich province's commitment to carbon reduction.

As of the end of January, the installed capacity for wind and solar reached 50.93 GW in Shanxi, representing 38.18% of its total power generation capacity, data showed from State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Company. This includes 25.03 GW from wind and 25.9 GW from solar.

Since 2021, Shanxi has been vigorously developing new energy, aligning itself with the national energy transition strategy. The province's wind and solar capacity installations maintained an annual average growth of 14.98% in 2021-23.

To facilitate utilization efficiency, Shanxi has expedited the establishment of new energy collection stations. The province has planned to set up 16 such stations in 2021-25.

In terms of cross-provincial power transmission, Shanxi continues to elevate the proportion of electricity generated from new energy sources. In 2023, the province achieved a record-breaking annual outbound electricity volume of 157.6 TWh, with new energy sources growing 14.95% year on year to 9.59 TWh.

Presently, Shanxi is able to get 97% of its new energy power output into the grid, the company said.
